We have a home that we love so it's really important for us to do everything possible to make it a HEALTHY HOME. We receive conflicting information almost daily about what is and what isn’t healthy for our family. It’s really hard to know what to believe, but there is one thing we can all agree on –needing clean air to breathe! Especially since we are all allergy sufferers in our house, we must keep our air clean!
Tips to a Healthier Home {Thanks to DOW}
1. Insulate your home to keep your family comfortable and improve energy efficiency.
SAFETOUCH™ Insulation contributes to improved indoor air quality and resists mold growth.*
SAFETOUCH™ Insulation doesn’t contain added formaldehyde or itchy fiberglass fibers.
2. Air Seal your home to keep critters and insects out and conditioned air in! Use GREAT
STUFF™ Insulating Foam Sealants and save money on your utility bills, too!
3. Review the EPA’s tips4 for preventing and controlling mold. Mold spores produce allergens
that can trigger asthma attacks and cause sneezing, runny nose and red eyes.
4. Keep your home free of radon, a colorless, odorless gas that can cause lung cancer by
ensuring your home is properly insulated.
5. Ditch tobacco products. The toxic chemicals found in secondhand smoke from products like
cigarettes can irritate lungs, or worse, lead to heart disease or lung cancer.
6. Consider purchasing a hygrometer to maintain the relative humidity in your home between
30–50%6 7. High humidity encourages mold growth.
7. Install a carbon monoxide detector. Carbon monoxide is an invisible gas that is odorless and
tasteless. Inhaling high levels of the gas poisons your body and can be deadly.
8. Limit the use of pesticides and household chemicals containing volatile organic compounds
(VOCs). These can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat; damage the central nervous system and
kidneys; and increase the risk of cancer.
9. Change air filters every few months to make sure dirty air isn’t re‐circulating through your
home.
We were recently introduced to some great products to improve the indoor air quality in our home. Dow Building Solutions recently started a campaign called Imagine Home Health, and we are excited to help spread the word about these great products!
The first product that I want to share with you is SAFETOUCH™ R-13 insulation. When we built our house we put the insulation in ourselves to save money. I had no idea that you could even buy this type of insulation. Now, that I am more informed, this insulation will definitely be our insulation of choice when we finish our basement. It doesn’t support mold growth nor does it contain added formaldehyde. These are two frequent causes of poor indoor air quality, according the Environmental Protection Agency’s “The Inside Story: A Guide to Indoor Air Quality".

The other product we received was A Therapure 201MB air purifier. This handy machine provides triple action purification in an energy efficient way. It has an easy-to-clean permanent HEPA-type filter that traps allergens, pollen, dust, pollution and cigarette smoke. Due to a musty smell in our basement we decided to try out our purifier in our basement. We can really tell a difference in the air quality in our basement with the use of the purifier.
