{GIVEAWAY} How to Know If It's Time to Go: A 10-Step Reality Test for Your Marriage {Book Review}

As if divorce isn’t hard enough, the added stress of the holidays after the split can be incredibly difficult on a family—especially the children. Drs. Birnbach and Hyman, authors of the new book, HOW TO KNOW IF IT’S TIME TO GO (March, Sterling Publishing) offer their expert advice to help families navigate this delicate situation, to assure that the children of divorced parents still have the best holiday experience possible!

The husband and wife team discusses six critical ways to keep the holidays merry:

Avoiding conflict
Not sending mixed messages
Making sure there is a fair division
Dealing with the upset of tradition
Introducing new partners
Handling extended family and grandparents

For the millions caught in unhappy marriages, consumed by sadness, anger, and fear, the question haunts: “Should I divorce?” Now, in their insightful new book, a husband-and-wife team of marriage experts helps readers find the answer by taking them through ten steps to determine if their relationship has reached the breaking point.

While Drs. Birnbach and Hyman do not advocate divorce, they point out that the most desirable situation—a happy long-term marriage—may simply not be possible in some cases. this unique guide dispels the myths about divorce and enables readers to recognize if there is still hope . . . or if they (and their families) are better off apart.

I love that this book addresses the need and issues of the children involved. It clearly states that there MUST be healthy relationships between the separated parents and future families. I found the section where the book also discussed how the lives of people who stay in chronically unhappy marriages compare with those who split up very interesting. The case studies, research, and a 100-question self-assessment to determine if it's “time to go,” also make this book a valuable resource for families.

About the Author
Dr. Lawrence Birnbach is a psychoanalyst who specialises in working with individuals and couples in troubled relationships. Dr. Beverly Hyman is an internationally known business and organisational consultant specialising in conflict management. She is a consultant to several United Nations agencies and has been a featured speaker at national and international conferences, including: The United Nations Conference to End the Decade for Women and many others.

Thanks for the post. I am always interested in new books that come out about divorce and getting a review is great. I believe if people genuinely put their children first divorce is a much calmer affair.
